Some trails feel like they were designed to remind you why you started hiking in the first place. Jacques Lake is one of those trails.
Tucked deep into the backcountry of Jasper National Park, this hike takes you through dense forest, across creek crossings, past wildflower meadows, and delivers you to a stunning alpine lake framed by towering peaks. It's long enough to feel like an accomplishment, remote enough to shake off the crowds, and — the best part — your dog is welcome to join you.

Getting to the Trailhead
The trailhead starts at the Beaver Creek Picnic Area, located along the road to Medicine Lake southeast of the Jasper townsite. The turnoff is well marked and there's a small parking area at the trailhead. Get there early in summer — this trail has gained popularity and parking fills up.
What the Trail Is Like
The first few kilometres wind through a thick forest of spruce and pine. It's shaded, which is a blessing on hot summer days and means your dog won't be baking on exposed rock. The trail is well-defined but not paved — expect roots, rocks, and the occasional muddy patch.
Around the halfway point, the forest starts to open up. You'll hit meadow sections that burst with wildflowers in July and August. This is where the views begin to reveal themselves — jagged peaks rising on either side, the valley stretching ahead of you.
The final stretch brings you to Jacques Lake itself. The water is a deep, cold turquoise — classic Rockies glacial lake. There's a backcountry campground here with basic amenities (pit toilets, food storage cables, fire rings). Even if you're just doing the day hike, the lake is the perfect spot to sit, eat lunch, and let your dog splash around at the shoreline.
Hiking This Trail With Your Dog
Jasper National Park requires dogs to be on leash at all times — no exceptions. This is wildlife country. Grizzly bears, black bears, elk, and moose all call this valley home, and a loose dog can trigger a dangerous encounter for everyone involved.
That said, this trail is excellent for dogs:
- Shaded forest keeps temperatures manageable
- Multiple creek crossings give your dog natural water stops throughout the hike
- Soft trail surface is easier on paws than rocky scrambles
- The lake is a perfect reward at the turnaround point
What to Pack for Your Dog
This is a long day hike or an overnight, so pack accordingly:
- Enough water and a collapsible bowl — creek water is available but having your own supply is wise
- Dog food and high-energy treats for a full day of effort
- Paw protection — the trail is mostly soft, but there are rocky sections
- A dog first aid kit — you're a long way from the nearest vet
- Waste bags — pack out everything, always
- An emergency dog sling — 12 km is a long carry if something goes wrong
Day Hike vs. Overnight
You can absolutely do Jacques Lake as a day hike, but it's a long one. At 24 km round trip, you're looking at 6–8 hours of hiking depending on your pace and how many stops you make. Start early.
If you have the gear and the permit, camping at Jacques Lake is something else entirely. Waking up at the lake with the mountains reflecting in the still morning water, your dog curled up beside you — it doesn't get much better than that. The campground is basic but well maintained, and the solitude of a backcountry night in the Rockies is hard to beat.
Best Time to Go
- Late June to early September is the typical hiking season
- July and August offer the best weather and wildflower displays
- Early September brings fall colours and fewer people, but shorter days and cooler temperatures
- Before late June, expect snow on the trail and potentially hazardous creek crossings
The Bottom Line
Jacques Lake isn't a quick afternoon stroll. It's a commitment — a full day or an overnight in the backcountry of one of Canada's most stunning national parks. But if you and your dog are up for it, this trail delivers. Big mountains, quiet forest, cold lake water, and not a single patio or parking lot in sight.
Just you, your dog, and the Rockies.
